TU Dublin - City Campus capture Lynch Cup after 21-year waitPosted: 15 March, 2019
Host College TU Dublin - City Campus reversed a half time deficit to capture the Gourmet Food Parlour Lynch Cup for the first time in 21 years with an 8 point victory over the Garda College.
Both sides were welcomed onto the Grangegorman pitch by up to 30 under 8 players from a number of local clubs and it seemed that the hosts were keen to extend that welcome throughout the first half to the visitors as they conceded three first-half goals at crucial times to leave the Guards ahead 3-4 to 1-6 at the break.
In truth, however, the difficult cross-field wind conditions proved an obstacle for both sides and TU Dublin - City Campus exploited this to their advantage in the second period with Niamh McEvoy, Orlagh Nolan and replacement Caoimhe O’Connor all having a major say.
In the 3rd minute the Garda College through Niamh Crowe raised their first green flag of the half, and when Trina Murray struck for another goal on the 15th minute, they had stretched their lead to five points (2-3 to 0-4). Still despite this TU Dublin - City Campus were creating plenty, but their shooting left a lot to be desired as their wide tally began to rise.
In an exciting final two minutes to the half, both sides struck for goals. First Emily Coakley for the hosts in the 30th minute to reduce the lead to just a point but this was cancelled out by another great strike for Siobhan Brady for the Garda College. The impressive Roscommon girl would lead the charge throughout for her team and ended up with 1-5.
With wind advantage and the introduction of Caoimhe O’Connor at the break, the Dublin side would take complete control of the contest. O’Connor would go on to score 2-1 and aided by the player of the game Niamh McEvoy; they assumed control of most of the second half.
By the three-quarter mark, they were clear 2-12 to 3-4 with O’Connor needing only twenty seconds to score her first goal. By the time she hit the net again in the 54th minute, they were now nine points clear (3-15 to 3-6) and well on their way.
