Department of Optometry 

The Department of Optometry runs two wholetime courses:

  • DT224 BSc (Hons) Optometry (level 8)
  • DT219 BSc (Ord) Ophthalmic Dispensing (level 7)

Irish optometrists practise at category 3 on the World Council of Optometry Global Competency-based Model of Scope of Practice and may register with the General Optical Council in the UK (as well as registering in Ireland).

Irish Dispensing Opticians practise at category 1 on the World Council of Optometry Global Competency-based Model of Scope of Practice and may register with the General Optical Council in the UK (as well as registering in Ireland).

We also offer postgraduate opportunities and have had several students graduate with both MPhil and PhD qualifications.

About Us

The Department of Optometry at DIT Kevin Street forms part of the School of Physics in the College of Sciences and Health.  It is active in research, community links programmes and fundraising as well as being part of the Mozambique Eyecare Project.  The programmes have been designed with the practical nature of the qualifications in mind and includes placement in industry.

The Department of Optometry offers the Republic of Ireland's only optometry degree programme and only qualification in ophthalmic dispensing.  We have a long tradition of excellence in the field.  Our clinics at the National Optometry Centre offer comprehensive clinical training with exceptional facilities in eye care.
