Glaucoma Care in the Community

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in Ireland. As our population ages and life expectancy increases glaucoma prevalence is also increasing. Community optometry plays an important role in glaucoma detection as optometric case finding during routine eye examination can prevent sight loss in this insidious disease.

This research assesses the feasibility of a new care pathway for glaucoma suspects. Optometrist, Catriona Barrett, is working with Prof. James Loughman and Prof. Colm O’ Brien to complete a PhD investigating the viability of a glaucoma shared care scheme in Ireland.
