The School of Physics and Clinical & Optometric Sciences has a strong contribution to the DIT's FOCAS research facility and much of the School's research in optics and materials overlaps with that pursued by FOCAS. See the separate FOCAS website for details of current research programs.

The School is associated with the Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics (IEO) which specialises in holographic and interferometric techniques and has developed novel functionalised materials and technologies in product authentication, sensing, vibration measurement and optical and medical device fabrication.

The School is also associated with the Centre for Radiation and Environmental Science (RESC) which has pioneered advances in radiation and environmental science and in biophotonics.

Other strengths include pioneering work in the teaching of physics through Problem Based Learning and e-learning by the Physics Education Research Group and research in optometry, clinical measurement and biophysics.
