Forfás in conjunction with the Higher Education Authority (HEA) commissioned a Bibliometric study of the Irish Public Research Base. This is one component of a larger study which seeks to optimise the alignment between the publicly funded research and the enterprise base for economic benefit. The Strategy Group for the Hunt report advertised an open call for submissions on 15th May 2009 and asked those submitting to identify the three most significant changes that they would wish to see made to Irish higher education and the barriers or obstacles which they would identify to the achievement of those objectives. In 2008, 107 different Health Research Board funded research projects were completed. The Picture of Health 2009 represents a snap shot of the outcomes from just some of those projects. The stories come from 55 researchers working in nine universities, eight hospitals and four research Institutes. The topics included range from babies health in the womb, to end-of-life care and span improving heart health, to medication safety. They highlight new discoveries and potential improvements to health service delivery, provide evidence to inform health policies and demonstrate the commercial benefits that can emerge as a result of health research.
