Structured PhD Programmes

Outline of the Programme

The model for structured PhDs at DIT has 4 main elements

  • PhD thesis and examination
  • Research and Professional Development Plans
  • Discipline Specific Skills Training
  • Generic Skills Training.

The model will be initially applied to some PhD students, but it will eventually apply to all research students across the Institute and will operate within the European credit transfer scheme in a modular format. The thesis and examination are the basis on which the award will be made.

The Regulations for Postgraduate Studies by Research (6th Edition)  detail the academic regulations for these awards.

Modules have been developed to address the learning outcomes outlined in the IUA PhD Graduates’ Skills Statement. All schools, Colleges, research groups and research institutes will be developing modules to address discipline specific skills training.

These modules will address the learning outcomes as outlined for Level 10 awards by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland in its National Framework of Qualifications.

The provision of any skills training must reflect the needs of the individual student and therefore research and professional development planning is also built into the framework.
