Step 1. Funding Opportunities

To see a list of open calls check Eureka! here......

The 3 main categories of sources of funding are the Irish State, the European Union, and others.

  • The Irish State
The National Development Plan (NDP) 2007-2013 has earmarked €2bn for research.  This funding is being channelled through a range of national agencies, each with a particular role to play in achieving the targets set out the NDP. Read more ...
  • European Union Funding
For current open calls under FP7 see the Cordis which contains information on all the programmes. The main platform for the European Union’s funding for research is the Framework Programme (FP). Funding of €52bn for the 7th round was agreed in 2007 and it will run until 2013. Read more..
  • Other Funding
Other funding can come from domestic sources, like associations (e.g. CII, ACCA, IEE) and companies (e.g. Glanbia, Georgia Tech). Researchers need to be aware of  international bodies (e.g. UN, OECD), companies (e.g. Intel, Google, Microsoft, Wellcome) and foundations (e.g. Gates Foundation, Getty) that may fund work in their speciality.  Some other national governments encourage non-national submissions, like US, Canada, Japan.   Read more....

Step 2. Preparing a Proposal

Research Information System

DRE's Research Information System is now available for online submissions of research proposals to the Research Support Office. Step 3. Proposal Submission

*** NB *** SIGNATURES

Proposal submissions generally require official signatures to verify that the proposal is supported internally and will be allocated the resources needed for the outputs to be delivered. In getting the sign-off, time must be allowed for the signatory to review the document and to sign. DIT, as with other well established HEIs, requires a proposal to be submitted for authorised signatures a MINIMUM of 5 working days before the deadline.

Final Checks

  • Enter your proposal on to DRE's Research Information System
  • Ensure the Proposal has the required DIT ethical committee clearance if necessary
  • Plan the means of proposal submission
  • Deadline: Funders will not accept submissions beyond the deadline
  • Documentation: Make sure all of the documentation is in the format and within the size limitations required. For example, certain EU calls do not allow attachments.
  • Location: Make sure the correct location for delivery is verified (for example the EPA have offices in Wexford and Dublin ).

Next step.....If your proposal has received funding from the agency you will then have to Set up and Manage your Project.
