Languages in the Faculty of Business

French is taught as an option on three programmes and German on one programme in the School of Marketing.

Students who choose French are taught Business French for two years for 5 hours per week in the Higher Certificate in Marketing (DT303). The focus is on Business French and the aim is to give the students a working knowledge of the language as well as to improve their cultural awareness and their understanding of France and its business environment.

French and German are an option on the BSc in Marketing (DT 341). Students have 5 class contact hours per week for 4 years. Students may opt to spend the first term of their third year abroad in a partner institution in France or Germany which helps them yo acquire a significant level of fluency in the target language. These students acquire a fluency that is very noticeable when they return. At the end of fourth year the students are asked to produce a summary of their dissertation in French or German and this is followed up by an oral examination. Over many years students taking French as an option have successfully sat and passed examinations from the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
