As well as the practice and theory of journalism, students will create content for digital media and learn how multimedia story-telling can create compelling storiesfor an online audience.

Graduates from the M.A in journalism go on to work across a wide variety of roles in media, including print and online media,  broadcasting, communications, as well as social media companies, and online community management. They work as reporters, researchers, editors, producers, presenters, communications managers, social media managers, data journalists and social media analysts, online community managers.

A fundamental principle behind the course is the belief that good journalism, produced by reflective, critical practitioners, is crucial in a democracy. The programme seeks to produce journalists who are multi-skilled and critically aware, and have a good understanding of the role of journalism in society.

The programme includes tuition, skills training, practical experience, a wide range of assignments including story-pitching, feature and news-writing, digital media skills, online news creation, tutorials, group projects, independent study and research. The journalism team are all media practitioners who bring a wide range of experience to their role. Through our industry contacts we also bring in guest lecturers who share their knowledge with students.

As it is an MA programme; students must engage fully in the critical and theoretical parts of the course.

Students, particularly international students, may choose to graduate with a Masters in Journalism (International) by selecting optional modules with an international theme.
