School mission: “Our Mission is to strive for excellence in teaching, learning, research and practice across the social sciences and law; to provide a collegial  environment for colleagues and students; to support students in reaching their full potential; and to engage actively with the wider community.”

History: The School and Social Sciences and Law traces its origins to early programmes in law, social care and early childhood education.  The Diploma in Childcare commenced in 1974 in the former College of Catering in Cathal Brugha Street and the first programme in early childhood education began in 1977. The Department of Law has been offering an alternative path into the legal profession for more than 30 years, commencing in the former College of Commerce in Rathmines.

Today, the School is engaged with cutting-edge issues spanning law and social sciences in Ireland, and internationally. We offer degree programmes in social care, early childhood education and law, and postgraduate programmes in law, criminology and child, family and community studies, as well as research MPhils and PhDs. We also offer professional development courses for people involved in the professions, civil service, and social care practice. Our graduates work across all sectors of the Irish economy and society and beyond, and we are justly proud of their achievements.  The Department of Social Sciences is based at the DIT Mountjoy Square campus, and has a national reputation in Early Childhood Education, Social Care and Criminology. The Department of Law is based at the DIT Aungier Street campus and offers another way to study law, with full- and part-time courses offering alternative routes into the legal profession.

Learning is student centred, with individual attention and small-group learning, delivered by staff with international reputations based on research outputs in law and the social sciences.
