Social Sciences

Dr. Maire Mhic Mhathuna, Head of Department of Social Sciences

Founded in 1974, the Department of Social Sciences offers undergraduate programmes that lead to professional qualifications in Social Care and Early Childhood Education.

Our courses are characterised by small student groups, creating a learning environment where everybody knows everybody. Courses aim to produce graduates with strong theoretical and practical skills to enable them to work, in a caring, empowering capacity, with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

All courses have a strong work-experience component, giving students practical experience of the work place.

Currently, we have approximately 450 undergraduate students and 15 MPhil and PhD research students. A taught MA in Criminology commenced in September 2006 and a MA in Child, Family and Community Studies commenced in September 2007.
