BA (Ord) Social Care Practice (Older Persons)
The new BA in Social Care is a level 7 degree designed for those working with older people in different care settings. It commenced in September 2010. Since the degree involves work based learning, applicants must be currently working with older people for approximately 20 hours per week. The course will run on one day per week with two one-week block learning modules during each academic year. The duration of the degree is three years and it is located in the School of Social Sciences and Law, DIT Mountjoy Square, Dublin 1.
This degree is the first of its kind to be offered in Ireland and represents a response to the emerging social care training needs in this sector. Recent legislation and policy developments have highlighted the importance of sustained quality of care to improve overall quality of life for older people. The course is interdisciplinary in nature covering social and psychological theory, professional practice, creative and experiential modules and skills training. It provides a holistic approach to older people in their family, community and care contexts.
