Approach:
The course employs a non-aversive, supportive approach to working with behaviours that challenge. This approach is embedded in a Human Rights Based Approach and in Person Centred Planning. Emphasis is placed on active participation by course members by way of application of Positive Behaviour Support principles in collaboration with people whom the participant is actively supporting in their day to day lives. This course is an intensive, hands-on training experience. Training activities include supervised practical assignments, reading and writing assignments, feedback sessions, lectures and practice exercises.

For Whom:
This advanced competency-based training course is suitable for frontline, supervisory and resource staff who live or work with people with behaviours that challenge. It is also suitable for family members. Generally candidates have a Level 8 award or a Level 7 award with practical frontline experience. Previous participants have worked in services for people who have intellectual disabilities, psychiatric needs, head injury, as well as child guidance services and services for older people. Each participant conducts a comprehensive behavioural assessment with one person who presents with behaviours that challenge and implements a multi-element behaviour support plan with that person. Supervision and tuition is provided on this work throughout the training period.
