Niall, a DT021 student in Kevin St and a member of DIT Rowing and Commerical Rowing Club, with team mates Andrew Goff (cox), Ryan Ballantine and Miles Taylor came home in a time of 6:11.45, less than 1.5 seconds behind the winning Italian team. This is the second year in a row that Niall has claimed a medal in these games as he also took Bronze in this event in 2017.
In a tightly contested final, Ireland were up against strong teams from Spain, Denmark, Italy and USA with the Spanish setting the early pace hitting the 500m mark before Italy took over at the front with the Danes, French and Americans less than two seconds behind. Ireland started to move up in the 3rd 500, overtaking the French and US teams and were gaining on the Italians but couldn't overhaul them before the finish line with the United States team finishing behind them in 3rd.
Niall is a member of the DIT Elite Athlete Support Programme which is an athlete led development programme whereby financial assistance and a network of support services are designed to meet the individual needs of elite and high performance athletes. Applications will re-open in September 2018 for existing students who would like to apply.
