Following on from his fastest rower win in the 2017 Dublin Sculling Ladder, Niall has continued to improve as an athlete with a win in the mens four at the University Championships with Scott Addison Jim Phelan and James Forbes, as well as making the Irish U-23 Lightweight Mens Rowing Team and getting a bronze medal at the world U-23 rowing championships in the Mens Lightweight Quad.

In the Cork Regatta, Niall raced a double with teammate Andrew Goff from UCD.  They came second in the final with a new personal best time of 6 minutes 25 seconds for the 2 km race. They were only 2.1 seconds behind Paul and Gary O'Donovan (about the length of a boat) and beat Mark O'Donovan and Shane O'Driscoll by 10.37 seconds, the first of only two times they were beaten this season both of which were at Irish regattas.

Along the way they set a new irish record in their quad, rowing the 2km race in a time of 5 minutes 56 seconds. At the world championships they managed 5m48s in their semi final, the fastest an Irish quad has ever gone internationally.

Niall is a member of the DIT Elite Athlete Support Programme which is an athlete led development programme whereby financial assistance and a network of support services are designed to meet the individual needs of elite and high performance athletes. Applications are currently being accepted to the programme before the closing date of 1st June 2018.
