Description:

This is a two year part-time programme designed to prepare students for careers as Electrical Services Engineers in the Green Economy. The programme has been designed in close consultation with the Electrical Services Industry. Students develop and apply expertise gained on the DT 078 feeder programmes to apply expertise in the technical areas of electrical services engineering and technology but particularly in renewable technologies and the energy management sector where opportunities are growing in the green economy. The programme will provide a wide knowledge base, which will enable the student to specialise in the research dissertation in different areas of energy management, renewable technology, electrical and electrical services engineering such as low and zero carbon technologies, lighting; energy management and automation, micro generation & standby power systems; project management; building services and sustainable building design. The programme is accredited by Engineers Ireland to the Sydney Accord and EURACE and so is internationally recognised in the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and throughout most of the world.

Career opportunities:

Electrical Services engineering graduates have opportunities in a wide and varied range of electrical and renewable technologies and energy management areas. There are many areas in which graduates can develop an interest and subsequently specialise. These include working in the green economy or for an electrical contractor or consulting engineer practice in Ireland or abroad. Presently there are opportunities for well qualified people in engineering systems support in the manufacturing sector, technical sales support, project management, energy and environmental control or in the provision of industrial services. The work invariably involves both office based and site/location activity.

Entry requirements:

Higher Certificate in Electrical Services Engineering or equivalent and approved by admissions board. A copy of results from previously completed study must be submitted for those students applying directly for this programme. Where students are coming from the feeder Higher Certificate programme they will be automatically transferred subject to satisfactory results in their examinations.
