DT764 BSc in Medical Device Innovation
Location:
DIT Bolton Street
Start date:
September 2011
Description:
B. Sc. (Hons) Degree in Medical Device Innovation is designed to equip individuals with a range of knowledge and skills to work in a medical device manufacturing environment, where the medical device industry is currently providing opportunities in design and innovation, manufacturing, service support, technical information and a range of other services that add value to the sector. The programme was formulated with direct industry input from the medical devices sector through discussions with a number of manufacturing companies and those involved in R&D. In particular, the programme strategically addresses the upskilling/ reskilling/ cross-skilling of engineers and scientists, preparing them for employment in this vibrant, growing, and technically advanced area of the Irish manufacturing domain. In addition to significant academic and personal support services, this validated programme will incorporate flexible delivery and assessment to best suit the needs of learners returning to education.
Course Duration:
1 Year
Career opportunities:
Ten of the world’s top fifteen device companies have significant manufacturing and R&D operations in Ireland. There are good job prospects for suitably skilled individuals. The continued stability and buoyancy of this sector is also evidenced by the fact that additional medical device manufacturers have established operations here recently (2011), with over 100 jobs being created.
The outcomes from the modules will equip graduates with desirable skills in the manufacture of medical devices, including critical regulatory approval and lean/six sigma knowledge. This knowledge will build on skills many of the cohort have from previous work experience. For instance, those from the engineering sector and sciences typically have knowledge of material science and computer modelling. Linking to and expanding no their existing knowledge-base will facilitate cross-skilling to include device component design, biomaterials and manufacturing methodologies.
In addition, the programme targets skills in the area of design and innovation of medical devices by facilitating the cohorts’ learning of design, CAD, materials, innovation etc., encouraging the development of these skills for reinvigorating the Irish economy. In conjunction with the above there are significant project management and team working components.
Progression:
Level 9 related programmes
Entry requirements:
Suitably qualified and experienced candidates with an appropriate engineering or science qualification at Level 7/8.
Also, those individuals, not strictly in the above categories, but who can meet recognition of prior learning requirements, by demonstrating significant and relevant prior work experience, ideally within a medical device manufacturing environment and prior learning to a standard suitable for entry.
Selection will be based on academic achievement, relevant work experience and interview.
