Description:

The programme provides an intensive introduction to two key areas of application and software development - programming, using the visual basic and java, and database technologies, initially based around the Microsoft Access product, and moving on to the use of SQL in database and programming applications. Students also take modules on internet systems development, graphics and multimedia to provide a rounded and flexible platform of programming and application development skills. A flexible approach to learning is possible on this programme, since students will have access to laboratories during daytime hours, and will have access to the institute’s virtual learning environment from outside the institute.

Career opportunities:

This programme will provide its graduates with key skills in software and application development which will allow them to ether the workforce in a range of areas. The particular skills provided will cover application and database development, and the development of web-based and multimedia-enabled applications thereby covering a range of enterprise computing, e-commerce and website development applications. Graduates from this programme will have spent significant amounts of time participating in large-scale projects and team-based assignments and will have had the opportunity to develop skills in these areas.

Entry requirements:

Candidates must hold an Irish leaving certificate with passes in 5 subjects, or equivalent. A number of places will be available for candidates who do not have a leaving certificate but who have an equivalent combination of education and work experience. The modules on this programme are currently available on DT036A, and procedures are currently in place to allow the granting of RPL for suitable candidates in accordance with current institute guidelines.
