FAQ For When you Arrive

What should non-EU international students do when they first arrive in Ireland?

Settle into your new accommodation if you have already organised it. If not you will need to visit DIT’s Student Sports, Recreation and Support Department at their office in Rathmines to enquire about the availability of accommodation although it is advisable to organise this prior to your arrival. Attend the International Students and College orientation programmers as scheduled in DIT. You will have received information on these events from the International Student Office prior to your arrival.
Contact the International Student Office to request letters you may need to register with the Immigration authorities and to open a bank account in Ireland.
Register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.
Renew your visa before it expires.

When must an international student register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau?

All international students from outside the EU must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) shortly after coming to Ireland. International students on their second or subsequent years of study in Ireland are also required to renew their visa yearly with the GNIB.

The GNIB office is located at: 13/14 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2. This is located just off O’Connell Bridge in the centre of Dublin.

How can an international student arrange accommodation in Dublin prior to arrival?

DIT Student Sports, Recreation and Support Department organise Dot’s off campus student accommodation with external student accommodation providers. The accommodation is fully furnished and it is in close proximity to the DIT north and south city campuses and is close to public transport.

What clothes are most suitable to wear in Ireland?

Ireland has a cold climate during September-March and a pleasant climate from April-August. It is essential that you bring water proof clothing, comfortable walking shoes and warm clothes (jumpers, coat etc).

How can an international student travel from Dublin airport to the city centre?

It is advisable to find out the directions to your accommodation from the airport before you arrive if you will travel by public transport and this will be available through your accommodation providers.

Taxi Services at Dublin Airport
A taxi rank is available just outside the arrivals hall at Dublin airport. The fare to the city centre is approximately €25. However, please ask the taxi driver the approximate fare to your destination prior to taking the taxi.
Buses to/from Dublin Airport
There are a number of bus services between Dublin airport and the city centre/Dublin area. There is no need to book seats in advance. All buses depart the airport just outside the arrivals hall. There is staff available at the airport to assist you to find the correct bus.
Air Coach serves Dublin Airport to the city centre, Ballsbridge and Donnybrook.
A second service also serves Dublin Airport to city centre, Stillorgan, Sandyford, and Leopardstown.
Dublin Bus serves Dublin Airport to the city centre, Busaras (Central Bus Station), Connolly Railway Station, and Heuston Railway Station.

Where is information available on the public transport systems in Dublin?

Dublin Bus provides an extensive transportation system throughout Dublin and the greater Dublin area.

Are there orientation programmes for new international students at DIT?

Yes, DIT’s International Student Office organises a comprehensive orientation programme for all new international students in September of each year. The details of this event are published on our website in August and they are also forwarded to the new international students a number of weeks before the event. It is advisable that all new international students attend this event as it will provide an invaluable opportunity to meet with other new international students and to gain a perspective into student life at DIT and living in Ireland through a series of seminars and social activities. The staff at the International Student Office looks forward to welcoming you to DIT at this event where we are available to address any questions and concerns which you may have.

Is there an information handbook for new international students?

The International Student Handbook 2009/10 is currently available to view on our website at www.dit.ie/international and at the following link: www.dit.ie/media/documents/internationalstudents/InternationalHandbook200910
You will receive a copy of the International Student Handbook 2010/11 during the International Student Orientation Programme in September 2010.

How may an international student request a letter from the International Student Office?

Registered international students at DIT may request letters from the DIT’s Webcourses site. This site may be accessed by logging onto www.webcourses.dit.ie and the site may also be found on the bottom of the homepage of the DIT website. The site may be accessed by registered DIT international students by logging on using the following:

This will bring you to a dedicated International Student Office link which you click and you will be directed to the area where you may order letters.

How can an international student open a bank account in Ireland?

International students are welcome to open a bank account in Ireland. All international students will need to have registered with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) before they may open a bank account. Each international student will require a verification letter for the bank from the International Student Office and they should also take their passport with their valid student visa to the bank when opening the account. There is a branch of Allied Irish Bank in DIT’s Aungier Street and Bolton Street colleges.

Is there a condition where an international student will not be able to renew his/her study visa?

An international student must comply with Irish laws when studying in Ireland and an international student may not be allowed to renew their study visa if he/she breaks any Irish laws. A study visa may also not be renewed if an international student demonstrates a poor attendance rate at classes (<80%) during the previous year of study in Ireland.

May international students work in Ireland while studying?

International Students do not need a work permit to work in Ireland. An international student registered on a full time programme (the duration of which must be at least one academic year) is permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester period and for up to 40 hours per week during the holiday periods. However, students such as those working on their thesis are not permitted to work more than 20 hours per week during the period that the thesis is being written even if this is outside of the semester period as these students are regarded as still being committed to their studies. All employees in Ireland have a Personal Public Service Number (PPS) number for tax purposes. Therefore if you are looking for a job you must apply for a PPS number.

How does an international student apply for a PPS number?

A PPS number is your Personal Public Service Number. This is a unique reference number that all employees in Ireland are required to have. Applications for your PPS Number should made through your local social welfare office which may be found at www.welfare.ie
All international students must request a letter from the International Student Office to support his/her application for a PPS number.

Where can international students find information about their legal rights working in Ireland?

All international students working in Ireland are covered under Irish legislation The minimum wage for hour is €8.65

Will an international student receive a DIT student email account?

An international student will receive a DIT student email account at registration. It is essential that the student checks this account at least once a week as this is how the International Student Office will corresponds with international students throughout their time in DIT.

Have International Students private medical insurance cover while studying in Ireland?

Yes, all international students who are paying non-EU tuition fees have private medical insurance cover during their study period in Ireland in accordance with the requirements of their student visa. This private medical insurance cover is organized by the International Student Office or Research Office if you are an international research student and the cost is included in the annual non-EU tuition fee.

Is there an English Language Support Service available to overseas students at DIT?

DIT’s School of Languages offers short courses in English for Academic Purposes. Academic credits are awarded provided that all elements of assessment are completed. Further information is available at www.languages.dit.ie/?contact_us
