Irish Language Office / Oifig na Gaeilge
Oifig na Gaeilge is working to promote the Irish language in every way possible in DIT and especially in student life in the Institute.
Oifig na Gaeilge works with an Cumann Gaelach (the Irish language student society), DIT Students Union and with other students, societies and clubs in promoting the language on campus.
Irish language events of every sort take place regularly and a week long festival of events takes place across the Institute during Seachtain na Gaeilge in March each year. Trips are organised by an Cumann Gaelach and Oifig na Gaeilge to the annual Oireachtas na Samhna festival and to Gaeltacht areas during the year. Oifig na Gaeilge also run free Irish language classes, academic and cultural events and organise a Gaeltacht scholarship scheme for students to attend Irish language courses in the Gaeltacht during the year.
An Irish Language Student Residency Scheme (Scéim Cónaithe Gaeilge) is also organised by Oifig na Gaeilge each year. This year scholarships have been awarded to 6 students to live together through the medium of Irish and the students must actively promote Irish on campus. Get in contact with Oifig na Gaeilge if you would like to take part in next year’s Scéim Cónaithe Gaeilge.
Oifig na Gaeilge needs your help to organise these events and we would love to hear from you if you speak Irish, if you want to learn Irish, if you have an interest in the work of Oifig na Gaeilge and if you have any ideas on promoting the Irish language on campus. You can call into Oifig na Gaeilge in Room 5036, DIT Aungier St. or send an email to gaeilge@dit.ie.
