General Study Skills Handbook

There are two support handbooks available to students - the first is a General Higher Education IT & Study Skills Handbook, suitable for any student, that starts at the very start wirth basic computer skills, Microsoft Office and email activities, then moves onto study skills, WebCourses and more. The second is an Academic Reading & Writing Handbook, concentrating in more detail on academic reading, note-taking, research, referencing and essay/assignment writing. This handbook is focused primarilty on Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences students, but is an invaluable resource for any DIT student. You can get a copy from our Mature Student Support Officer or you can download them here. Study Skills Classes for Mature Students

Starting on Tuesday, October 6th 2009, there will be a series of classes aimed at improving your study skills, academic reading and writing and more. These classes will take place once a week, from 1.10pm to 1.40pm on Tuesday Afternoons (Northside) and will be repeated on the following Wednesday afternoons for Southside students (where possible).

There'll be tea, coffee and biscuits provided free of charge, for those of you that are peckish. There will be no classes during Review Week, or the Easter Break or on any Public Holdidays. Information on more classes will be going up as it becomes available, so keep an eye on this page...


Class 1: Academic Writing & Essay Preparation

Northside Students: Room 311, Mountjoy Square, Tuesday October 6th, 1.10pm
Southside Students: Room 205, Kevin St, Thursday October 15th, 1.10pm

This class focuses on Essay Preparation - how to plan out and structure your essay, what the terminology means ("discuss", "analyse" etc) and importantly, Citing & Referencing. Details are included on the two major Citing & Referencing styles used in DIT - the APA Style (used by the School of Social Sciences) and the Harvard System (used by the Faculty of Business). Click on the links below for the notes from the class:

Class 2: Library Tour & Catalogues

Northside Students: Library, Cathal Brugha St, Wednesday, October 21st, 2.30pm
Southside Students: Library, Aungier St, Wednesday November 4th, 1.10pm

This is a reminder class of the session from our recent Mature Students Welcome Event on the 8th of September in Bolton St. If you missed it, or need a refresher, this is an invaluable session for you. Learn how to find exactly what you want on the online Library Catalogue, get a tour of the library and more! There is a two week delay between the classes because of Review Week.


Class 3: Time Management

This is a class given by DIT's Careers Service that can give you valuable tips on how to manage your busy schedules. It can be a challenge sometimes juggling an academic career with your home life and other commitments - we're here to help.

Class 4: Presentation Techniques

Northside Students: Room TBC, Mountjoy Square, Tuesday December 1st, 1.10pm

At some stage or other, almost every student has to stand in from of their peers and make a presentation. Speaking in public doesn't have to be the daunting task that it seems, and this class will teach you the do's and don't's of making a great presentation.


Special Memory Techniques Class

Learn to remember anything you want! Learn all about the three key-elements of memory, how to retain and retrive those lecture notes and apply memory techniques to any subject you wish.

Special Pre-Exam Classes: Exam Techniques & Stress Management

DIT's Counselling Service are putting on these two one-hour sessions in the run up to the exams - these will be vital in your exam preparation over the Christmas holidays, so don't miss them!

Class 5: Focusing

The object of this class is to help you learn to focus on the task at hand. It's easy to become distracted, especially when working on an assignment or an exam you find difficult. This class will help you to strengthen your focusing abilities and work under pressure.


Class 6: Concentration & Memory

Northside Students: Room TBC, Bolton St, Tuesday February 16th, 1.10pm
Southside Students: Room TBC, Aungier St, Wednesday February 24th, 1.10pm

This class, given by DIT's Counselling Service, teaches you uself hints and tips to improving your memory and concentration to help you get through the exams. A natural follow-on from the focusing class, this one is invaluable in the run-up to exam-time.


Class 7: Revision Techniques

With exam-time closer than you might think, it's never too early to start the revision process. We'll give you some great tips on organising your revision time.


Review Week & Easter Break


Class 8: Mindfulness & Stress Reduction

Exams can be a stressful time, but not to worry. This class will help you to deal with the extra pressure that can accompany the run-up to the exams.


Class 9: Exam Techniques

Southside Students: Room TBC, Kevin St, Wednesday May 5th, 1.10pm

This class teaches you the best way to approach your exams and what you need to do to be as prepared as you can. With the summer exams starting in a few weeks, preparation is key. We'll show you how.
