Mature Students: The 'Old Skool' Society
When a Mature Student considers a return to full-time education, there are many questions that need to be answered. In addition to the academic side of college life and the challenges it presents, the topic of integration raises a few questions of its own:
- Will I fit in?
- How do I meet other Mature Students?
- Is there a social side to being a Mature Student at DIT?
Well, there's good news! DIT has a Mature Students Society (The 'Old Skool' Society), membership of which is open to any and all Mature Students that wish to join. This includes undergraduates, postgraduates, full-time or part-time. Having just been reformed in the 2008/09 year, we spent a while finding our feet, but still held several great events.
We hit the ground running in 2009/10, and recruited over 130 members for the society, holding our first event in Week 3 - a bowling night! We've lots more events planned this year, so read on...
Win a Hoodie from the Mature Students 'Old Skool' Society
This year's Mature Student Society are designing hoodies and need YOU to come up with a slogan for the society. We've re-named the society "The Old Skool Society" and are in the process of organising hoodies and t-shirts with our new name for our members. Every society needs a motto, so we are putting it to you, our members to come up with one! Send your suggestions, along with your name, mobile number and student number, to ditmaturesoc@gmail.com before Friday, 20th November 2009. The best slogan as selected by the committee wins a brand new hoodie.

'Old Skool' Society AGM, Wednesday 21st October: Hampered somewhat by rain of epic proportions, our AGM went down well, and we elected a new committee to take the reins for 2009/10. And ate an awful lot of pizza.

Events in 2008/09
Semester 1:
October:
Coffee Mornings in DIT Bolton Street, DIT Kevin St, DIT Aungier St and DIT Mountjoy Square. These "Friendship Lunches" acted as a great opportunity for mature students to get together, chat, compare stories and grab a free lunch.
November:
We followed up a busy October with another Friendship Lunch in DIT Cathal Brugha St, giving our members a chance to take a break from their studies.
December:
The Mature Students Christmas Night Out was well-attended at the Bernard Shaw pub on Richmond St - some familiar faces turned up, along with a few new ones too! A brilliant night was had by all, and we agreed to have another one as soon as possible...
Semester 2:
Intervarsity Mature Student's Ball: Trinity Mature Students Society organised an Intervarsity Mature Students Ball at The Russell Court Hotel on Harcourt St on the 26th March 2009. A large crew from DIT attended, and a great night was had by all!
Mature Students Isle Of Man Trip, June 2009: The Mature Students Society went all the way to the Isle Of Man! We flew over for the last weekend in June 2009, well after the exams, and had a ball. Check out our Facebook Profile to see the pictures!
