Description

It is designed to provide graduates of certificate-level courses (NQAI Level 6), or persons with equivalent qualifications, with an opportunity to pursue their studies to ordinary degree level (NQAI Level 7). This technician programme has a strong systems perspective, which is intended to develop the student’s knowledge and technical abilities in the areas of computer & communications engineering, software and web development and industrial electronics systems.  The programme is divided into core and elective modules.

Entry Requirements

A technician certificate qualification (NQAI Level 6) in electronics, or related discipline from a recognised educational institution with at least a Merit grade, or a qualification, that is deemed by the Dublin Institute of Technology to be equivalent.

Examinations / Assessments

The programme is delivered as a series of modules, lasting one semester each. Each year of study covers two semesters; the first from September to January, and the second from February to May. Written examinations are held at the end of each semester, in January and in May. Repeat written examinations take place in August. The programme is assessed by written examination and continuous laboratory assessments.

Progression

Graduates of this programme who achieve a merit or distinction and meet certain subject prerequisites are normally eligible to apply for the third year of the Honours Degree in Computer and Communications Engineering (DT081 full-time or DT074 part-time) and other similar programmes.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can expect to work in industry, setting up, commissioning or maintaining complex communications or other high-tech systems.  In a relatively short time they can look forward to supervising other staff doing this work.  A graduate of this programme might also work as a member of a team designing and developing new systems.
