Description
This is a programme delivered over one academic year providing students with knowledge and skills in the area of database design and implementation. Students complete modules in each semester which are focussed on the skills needed to design databases systems and build those systems into industry standard, robust systems.
Content
The programme is designed to meet the needs of the student, and is strongly focused on practical skills. Depending on the needs of the student different modules can be selected for either day-time or evening-time study, at introductory or advanced level, and using a choice of technologies.
The content of the modules on the programme covers the Relational Model, Database Design, the Structured Query Language (SQL), Normalisation and Transaction Management.
The CPD diploma is entirely flexible to the student’s needs and can be tailored using the full suite of geographic information systems, spatial databases and web mapping modules available in the School of Computing, including study during the day-time or the evening time.
How to apply
Applications for entry in September 2012 as currently being accepted. Application deadline for early admission is Friday, 8th June 2012. Applications will be accepted until Friday, 7th September 2012 subject to availability of places on the programme.
Entry Requirements
As a continuing professional development diploma, this is aimed at individuals who have an interest in web design and implementation, and require development of skills in this area, and have an existing qualification at level 5 (Leaving Certificate or above) or relevant experience equivalent to that level or above.
Examination / Assessment
Written assessment and / or continuous assessment for each module taken.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the programme have database design and implementation skills which they can apply in their professional work. This is not a major award programme, and is intended for upskilling of individuals in the workplace. Graduates can apply for admission to major award programmes in the School of Computing, and may apply for exemptions from relevant modules on database systems.
In particular, graduates are encouraged to apply for admission to the part-time BSc Information Systems and Information Technology (DT249) in the School of Computing.
Exemptions
Students can select modules based on their needs, so exemptions are not relevant for this programme.
Award
Students who complete the programme are given a Continuing Professional Development Diploma in Database Systems at Level 6 or 7 (depending on level and modules chosen) on the National Framework of Qualifications, usually with 20 ECTS but recognising that students can flexibly choose more or less than 20 ECTS the diploma will identify the number of credits completed by the student.
