Description

This programme has been designed to meet the demand for a flexible, undergraduate honours degree in business, with modules in core business studies subjects and specialist subjects across the following streams:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Marketing

The programme is modularised allowing students a range of choices to meet their future needs (streams and modules are subject to demand and timetable restrictions). It allows them to select the skills, knowledge and attributes that they believe will be required of them upon graduation.

Content

The programme requires students to complete core modules and stream modules from each of the areas outlined above.

The core modules include:

 Stage 1 Management*, Accounting*, Quantitative Analysis*, Information & Communications*, Economics*, Irish & EU Law and Behavioural Science  

 Stage 2

Organisation Behaviour, Business Finance*, Management Accounting*, Ireland & the Economic Environment, Business & Company Law, Operations Management, Marketing and Managing Information, plus 2 modules from selected stream.
 Stage 3 Human Resource Management*, Project Management, Business Information Systems, Services Marketing and Organisational Change, Advanced Management Accounting, plus 4 modules from selected stream.
 Stage 4 Strategic Management*, Corporate Finance,* Group Research Project*, plus 4 modules from selected stream. Stream modules are outlined in the following table.

Entry Requirements

With the objective of facilitating entry to those with appropriate educational background and work experience, the guidelines governing selection for the programme are as follows:

  • Applicants in the main are mature students, already employed, who are seeking formal qualifications to enhance a career in the Business disciplines of Accounting & Finance, Financial Services and Marketing.
  • Applicants should hold the Irish Leaving Certificate with passes in not less than six subjects, two of which should be at Grade C3 or better in higher level papers.
  • In special circumstances applicants with substantial work experience at an appropriate level but who do not have the minimum qualifications may be accepted. Selection will be based on an interview.
  • Applicants with a degree or equivalent qualification may be granted exemptions on a module-by-module basis from the first three stages.
  • Selection will be on the basis of completed application form, using the following criteria for selection: (a) Educational background (b) Practical business experience.

Arrangements will be made to facilitate DIT graduates who hold relevant ordinary degrees and who wish to undertake additional study towards the honours degree.

How to Apply/Enrol

Completed application forms should be returned to the School of Management (address above) by Friday 20th July 2012. As the number of places is limited, candidates may be short-listed on the basis of information supplied on the application form. Late applications may be considered should vacancies remain. Candidates will be notified of the outcome or of any short-listing procedures.

Examinations / Assessments

All examinations on this course as with all courses leading to Dublin Institute of Technology awards are conducted in accordance with the General Examination Regulations of the Institute.

Award

Successful graduates will be awarded a B.B.S (Honours) of the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Progression

To progress from one stage of a programme to the next a student must normally pass modules to the value of 60 ECTS credits at that stage including all those modules which are compulsory for that programme of study.

Learning Outcome

The Bachelor of Business Studies programme aims to provide an intellectual formation and a path to personal development which will develop a graduate equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the philosophies and theoretical perspectives which inform sound Management practice

Career Opportunities

The programme has been designed primarily to equip graduates for progression in executive positions in their career and at the same time provide them with a foundation for further academic or professional study in their chosen stream area. In most streams DIT can offer students opportunities to pursue further postgraduate studies in full-time and/or part-time modes.
