Description

This programme offers a challenging opportunity for those individuals who wish to pursue a career in management in the hotel, restaurant, and general services industry. This dynamic programme provides a future-orientated and industry-focused curriculum. This degree programme offers the student a major in the final year of the programme enabling the student to specialise in one of the following areas depending on demand: Food and Beverage Management, Front Office and Accommodation Management or Conference and Event Management (subject to demand and availability).

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are almost limitless in hospitality and tourism enterprises worldwide. Degree holders are trained professionals with sound operational work experience and a comprehensive understanding of the hotel and catering industry. As such, they are in demand by a large cross section of the industry from general management within the tourism industry, to more specialised areas. Career opportunities in this sector include marketing and sales, personnel, food and beverage management, rooms division management, and conferencing management in Ireland and abroad. In addition, graduates may progress to a variety of postgraduate programmes in a range of disciplines.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the BA Hospitality Management (Part-time) shall be:

(a) Irish Leaving Certificate in five subjects.  Results must include:

  • At least OD3 in Irish OR English
  • At least OD3 in Mathematics
  • At least Grade OD3 in one of French OR German

OR

(b) an equivalent qualification

Additionally, substantial experience (at least one year) in the hospitality industry is required.  Applicants must be currently or recently employed in the hospitality industry.  Documentary evidence of hospitality industry experience and any relevant academic experience will be required and should accompany the application form.  All applicants will be interviewed.

An equivalent pass grade in the Cambridge Certificate in English will be accepted as meeting the minimum language requirement for entry to the course. International students may study English as a foreign language in place of a required language subject. The School will consider applications from mature students (aged 23 and over) who do not hold the appropriate minimum entry requirements but who have substantial experience in the hospitality industry. 

The final selection of candidates for places on the course will be made on the basis of Leaving Certificate results (or equivalent) and experience in the hospitality industry. Places may be offered to mature students who meet certain criteria in respect of age, suitability and experience to-date in the hospitality industry. Transferees from other courses will also be considered.  Students will be allowed to transfer between the day-release and evening programmes, subject to approval from the Head of Department and/or Head of School. Interviews will be used in the selection process. Exemptions may be given in specific modules (see section on exemptions and Recognition of Prior Learning), on a case by case basis.

Duration

This programme will be offered over three years on a part-time basis. It will be structured on the basis of three evenings a week from September to May each year, and from 5.30 pm. - 9.30 pm. (approx.). In the final year a fourth night may be specified for part of the year. Some additional times such as Saturdays may be scheduled to ensure all course content is completed. Module examinations where held are held in January and May each year..

How to Apply/Enrol

Completed application forms should be returned to the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism 31 August 2011. As the number of places is limited, candidates may be short-listed on the basis of information supplied on the application form. Late applications may be considered should vacancies remain. Candidates will be notified of the outcome or of any short listing procedures. 

All applicants will be interviewed. Enrolment will commence in September and will extend to approximately 30 candidates.

Examinations

Examinations will be a combination of continuous assessment and terminal examinations.

Award

BA (Ord) in Hospitality Management of Dublin Institute of Technology. Graduates also qualify for membership of the Irish Hospitality Institute and membership of the Catering Managers Association of Ireland.
