Programme Description
This is a part-time course looking closely and the issue of drug use in our society. It will be of interest to people working in a variety of fields including for example social care, youth work, sports and for people active in their local communities.
Content
The course takes a look at the nature of the drug problem with specific reference to youth culture and consumption. In addition the course will equip students with an overview of drug and alcohol policy in Ireland and the historical evolution of state responses. The course provides an overview of the main treatment approaches and critically examines the relationship between drugs and crime in Ireland. Participants will develop a portfolio that will include reflections on practice together with their own analysis of drug problems and policies.

There are no specific entry requirements.
Duration
24 and independent study of 76 hours. The course involves 24 class contact hours consisting of a mixture of nine evening and two Saturday morning sessions.

How to apply/enrol
Completed application forms should be returned to the Department of Social Sciences (address listed above) by 5th September 2011. As the number of places is limited, candidates may be short-listed on the basis of information supplied on the application form. Late applications may be considered should vacancies remain. Candidates will be notified of the outcome or of any short listing procedures.

Award
On successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Continuing Professional Development by the Dublin Institute of Technology (5 ECTS credits at NQAI Level 8).
