Module Description
This module is aimed at the postgraduate learner. Its focus is on deepening the learners understanding of applied packaging design in the food and beverage industry.
Module Aims
To develop an understanding of the concept of packaging design as a style and apply this knowledge to new food and beverage packaging design. To understand the function of applied design to a corporate image.
Learning Outcomes
Create new and dynamic food and beverage packaging designs both functional and aesthetic Demonstrate through research, the influence on the consumer of the concept of packaging design as a style and apply this knowledge to the design of high-quality food packaging. Evaluate and critique food and beverage packaging designs. Apply the transferable skills gained, to other industries.
Learning and Teaching Methods
The focus is on learner centred development. The teaching methods include lectures, discussions, critiques, case studies, problem-solving exercises, videos, DVDs, project work, self-directed learning, web-based research, demonstrations, practical laboratory work and independent site visits. A systematic assessment and feedback of the learners continuous practical work progression is an integral element.
Content
| Unit 1 | Introduction to Packaging Design. Look at packaging concepts from food (or alternative) advertising campaigns. 1st research assignment, collect food product advertisements and examples of two and three dimensional food packaging, research primary sources, food company's, advertisings agencies, designers and college lecturers. Paste advertisements and two dimensional designs into folder. Intranet search: The History of Style, (150 words, approximately) Design project, based on history of style research (or an equivalent). Record all images in folder. |
| Unit 2 | Investigate how packaging design influences the consumer, paying particular attention to layout, lettering styles, colour schemes and quality of materials (visual, tactile, textural, termographic and olfactory issues). Continued Design project consideration of new designs. 1st Product autopsy a visual analysis of a food packaging design 300-400 words approximately, record all images in folder. |
| Unit 3 | Investigating and researching continued: Considering possibilities: imagery, lettering, and layout. Continued design project, mock-up of new design. Research project: intranet/library search The History of Style (record all images). |
| Unit 4 | Continued Design project, finish design, discuss and critique new designs in class Product Autopsy, a visual analysis of a packaging design 300-400 words approximately, record all images. |
| Unit 5 | Design of Logos. Research of logos, get examples, display on suitable mounting board discuss and critique designs in class. Design a logo for a food or beverage company. 3rd Product Autopsy, a visual analysis of a packaging design 300-400 record all images. (Handout and discuss Meta project). |
| Unit 6 | Logos, Present research of logos in class and discuss their merits, further refining of company logos. Research Monograms, get examples and display on suitable mounting board. Meta Project design of new packaging, develop a brand identity (or an equivalent concept) Research Project a new packaging design. Product Autopsy, in-store research and visual analysis photograph and record all images (number of words to be determined). |
| Unit 7 | Design of Monograms: Present research of monograms in class and discuss their merits. Design a monogram for a food company (or an equivalent). Continued: Meta Project design of new packaging, develop a brand identity (or an equivalent concept), Display designs, investigate colour and texture. |
| Unit 8 | Monograms, further refining of company monograms. Continued: Meta Project, investigate shape and pattern display and critique mock-ups of new packaging design. (Product Autopsy 400-500 words approximately). |
| Unit 9 | Investigating tactile and textural packaging. Continued Meta Project critique and further refine mock-ups of new packaging design. |
| Unit 10 | Continued Meta Project, critique and further refine mock-ups. |
| Unit 11 | Learners undertake an independent site visit to evaluate the presentation and display of food packaging (or an equivalent). Continued Meta Project, critique and further refine. |
| Unit 12 | Final presentation of finished packing design. The learners will display their work. |
