Deferred Entry 

In order to avail of the facility, an applicant must first be offered a place and then take the following steps:

Step 1:  

The successful applicant should not accept the place offered by CAO.

Step 2:  

S/he must apply in writing to the Admissions Officer requesting a deferral and giving the following information:

  • Name & address:
  • CAO number:
  • Programme code:  
  • Reason for deferral:
  • Note: CAO offer notice must be attached.

Step 3:  

The written request must be received in the Admissions Office not later than two days before the closing date for acceptance of places in the particular offer round.

If the request is granted ...

the applicant will be advised in writing and a place on the programme involved will be reserved for him/her for the following year.

Applicants who are granted deferral will be required to:

  • submit an application to CAO for the deferred programme by 1st February in the following year.
  • include on this application the deferred programme as the first and only preference.
  • advise the Admissions Office in writing of their new CAO application number by 30th April.

If the request is not granted ...

the applicant will be notified in writing and may then accept the original offer for the current year.

Applicants who request deferral in order to take up another third level place in the CAO system will not be granted deferred entry.

Please note:

  • Applicants who do not follow the above instructions will have the deferred place cancelled.
  • This deferral process allows applicants to defer for one year, at the discretion of the Admissions Officer.
