What is Electrical Services Engineering?
The field of Electrical Services Engineering covers a wide area of engineering technology from the design of services used in modern buildings today to project management and energy conservation. Modern hi-tech buildings are required to comply with the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD) and other European Directives. To do this, they must be equipped with renewable and sustainable energy technologies to reduce energy demand and optimize building performance. The design of the electrical services for such a building is the domain of the Electrical Services Engineer. These services include electrical power distribution, standby generation, lighting, emergency services (lighting and fire), access control, data services, automation, building management systems, integration of renewable energy technologies and many more..
What will I study on this programme?
Students will have a keen interest in how things work and in problem solving. There is plenty of scope for exercising innovation, creativity and flair when using new technology to solve everyday problems. Green building technology, efficient use of energy, sustainability are all areas that are addressed. The programme features elements of continuous assessment in all subjects.

What are my career opportunities?
Electrical Services engineers enjoy a very varied, interesting and well-paid work environment. There are many areas in which graduates can develop an interest and subsequently specialise. These include working in an electrical design office for a consulting engineer, as engineering systems support in the manufacturing sector, technical sales support, project management, energy and environmental control or in the provision of industrial services. The work invariably involves both office based and site/location activity.
What other options do I have after completion?
Students who graduate from DT010 may progress as follows:
The one year advanced entry programme BSc honours degree in Electrical Services and Energy Management. DT712 / DT018.
And from there to the one year MSc in Energy Management. DT711 / DT015.
Graduates may also gain Advanced Level Entry to higher degrees programmes in DIT and elsewhere.
