What is Event management?

Event management is the process by which an event is planned, prepared and produced and the event manager’s job is to oversee and arrange every aspect of the event including the finance and sponsorship, marketing, health and safety, organising and controlling all components, implementing and evaluating the design, staging and all other associated activities.

The events industry is a young and exciting industry that has expanded rapidly in the last decade giving rise to an ever increasing demand for professional event managers. This growth nationally and internationally has been fuelled by the increase in the number, size and sophistication of the events being organised and the realisation by organisations of the important role events play in helping achieve objectives. Events can take many forms ranging from the very large sporting events such as the World Cup, Olympic Games and the Ryder Cup to music festivals such as Glastonbury, Oxegen, Roskilde and Electric Picnic, right through to conferences, meetings, trade shows and exhibitions, fundraising events held by charities, to special family or social occasions.

What are my career opportunities?

The programme is designed to enable graduates to gain employment in challenging positions with varying levels of responsibility. Graduates with event management competence can expect to find employment in areas such as event and entertainment enterprises, professional conference organisers, national and regional tourism organisations, hotels, public relations, self-employment project management, venue management, convention bureaux, sports tourism, technology management, community development, arts and music sectors, public sector support and financial institutions. In addition, there are opportunities for graduates in consultancy, research, and postgraduate education.

What other options do I have after completion?

Students who have reached the appropriate honours standards may have access to a range of Post-Graduate and Masters Degrees in DIT, and elsewhere in higher education nationally and internationally.

What will I study on this programme?

The overall aim of the BSc Event Management programme is to develop the individual students by equipping them with the appropriate knowledge, understanding and professional management skills necessary to be successful in the exciting and vibrant events industry through the provision of a carefully designed and academically rigorous programme.

What our students say!

  • Paul Gallagher (2009): Back in 2004 I decided to apply for the full time course in event management in DIT, wishing to pursue a career in the events industry. Since then I have never looked back, partaking in endless work experience opportunities, learning the theory behind events, planning, health & safety, business and marketing to name but a few and even the odd mid week college night out! The whole experience of going to college not only opened up so many doors and opportunities for me in the industry but I got so much more from it. What the whole experience does for you is it equips you with the skills, knowledge, experience and tools needed to get where you want to be in your career and prepares you for the next step in life as well as making long life friendships along the way.

Even now, almost two years on from graduating, it has been amazing the recognition that the qualification gained from DIT has given and is very much so respected by professionals working in industry. If I didn’t have the opportunity of going to college back in 2005 I would not be where I am today. Presently I am self-employed as ‘Paul Gallagher Event Management’ working on a range of different events for clients from small conferences of 5 - 50 people to larger sized festivals with over 60,000 people in attendance and loving every minute of it.

The support given by DIT and the people involved behind it should be embraced, and given the opportunity to take a course, should be taken, given half the chance. What I took from DIT and my time spent in college was much more than a great qualification but a life changing experience of one of the most memorable times of my life.
  • Rebecca Dunwoddy, 1st year: Two years ago I would never have pictured myself studying Event Management at DIT, but here I am, almost one year into the course and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Since starting the course in September it’s been one of the best experiences of my life. It seems that almost everyone in the class has bonded so well with one another and even though we’ve only known each other a few months, it feels as if we’ve known each other for years. I feel as though I’ve made some truly lifelong friends already and hopefully many future co-workers. However, I believe that this is mostly down to DIT itself. The college has such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere that it’s practically impossible not to make friends. All of the lecturing staff are so helpful and open that they make the transition from secondary to third level almost seamless. They also assist in ensuring that students adapt as well as possible to the differences that college life brings. The course itself is extremely interesting and unlike other courses available it is largely focused practically on the event industry, not just academically. One of the modules requires 200 hours of work experience to be completed in first year. The experience gained from this part of the course is invaluable to learning about the event industry and puts you at a clear advantage over graduates from other courses that don’t get to experience the extent of events that we do at DIT. Putting this course as number one on my CAO was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I look forward to finishing my next three years at DIT.
