What is Human Resource Management ?

Human Resource Management, or HRM, is generally identified as the modern and strategic approach to the management of an organisation’s most valued assets - the people working there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the business. In this context, the field of HRM has advanced significantly over the last twenty-five years from being a back office administratively driven function to being a strategy-critical and board room function.

What will I study on this programme?

The programme has been designed through two vertical strands of study that run throughout the four years of the programme with levels of integration incorporated at various stages. The two strands are: Human Resource Management and Business Management. This is supported by an emphasis on professional practice in the form of a work placement.

Year 1 provides the student with the fundamentals of business operations and HRM. This forms the foundation of the students’ knowledge and understanding.

Year 2 expands on the fundamentals through closer examination of functional areas within HRM. This is complemented by examination of a broad set of integrated business operations functional modules.

A critical component of Year 3 is the professional work placement which affords the student the opportunity to work alongside professionals in a mentored HRM environment. This placement affords the student a valuable opportunity to appraise real world HRM situations and apply learning from the programme to date.

Year 4 culminates in the student addressing HRM issues at a strategic level. Case study tuition forms an important part of the final year modules allowing the students an opportunity to critically evaluate a wide range of situations and apply relevant learning from the previous three years of study in an integrated and informed manner.

First year students enrolling on this programme who have obtained 500 points or more in their Leaving Certificate, will be awarded a first year entrance scholarship of €2,000 in recognition of their outstanding performance in the Leaving Certificate Examination.
