What is International Business & Languages?

This programme is truly the most international that DIT has to offer: it attracts students from Ireland’s diverse range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as students from across the globe, who wish to perfect their command of English and gain a thorough grounding in business studies. Graduates of this programme will go on to bring much-needed linguistic diversity to the 21st Century workplace both in Ireland and abroad.

This full-time, four-year Honours Degree programme is for non-native speakers of English or Irish. As it is a conjoint programme offered by the School of Languages and the School of Marketing, contact hours are split evenly between language and business subjects. In order to study the business subjects, which are taught entirely through English, students should have a good level of linguistic competence in English on admission (see entry requirements for details).

What are my career opportunities?

In view of the increasing globalisation of world markets and the dependency of the global economy on international trade, it is essential that students develop the linguistic skills, critical thinking skills and business skills required. Students who successfully complete the programme will be equipped to play a key role in companies and organisations in seeking out new markets and/or expanding within them.

Graduates will be equally well suited to the demands of all business organisations from small and medium sized enterprises to multinational concerns. This undergraduate programme also provides an ideal foundation for further studies.

What will I study on this programme?

The programme is shared equally between the School of Languages and the School of Marketing at the DIT. This means that you will study English and another language of your choice and also have a broad level of exposure to the world of international business. You will benefit from the international reputation, experience and knowledge of both schools. You will also study the full range of business modules required to gain an in-depth understanding of the international business environment.

Classes in English language foster the study of the language as well as furthering language acquisition.

You will achieve a good working competence in a second foreign language, which is taken from beginner’s level. Second languages on offer include beginner’s level Italian, Spanish, French and German (range of language choice is subject to available resources). Students may not study their native language as their second language.

You will also take the full range of business subjects which will give you the skills and knowledge required to embark on a career in international business.

What other options do I have after completion?

Students who have reached the appropriate honours standards may have access to a range of Masters Degrees in DIT and elsewhere in Higher Education.

What our students say!

Sigita Jatu (DT558 Year 4 Graduate): Four years of studying the course International Business and Languages (DT558) was a truly great experience. I had the opportunity to explore the English language in various contexts with other multinationals while the international business element took place in integration with Irish students. The lecturers were always supportive and helpful, and their dedication and warmth made the course special to me. DT558 was challenging yet rewarding, combining knowledge in a variety of business areas, literature, writing techniques and cultures, as well as journalism and an additional language. The diversity of the subjects offered allowed me to remain flexible in today’s competitive world, where a combination of business skills and languages can be crucial. Highly recommended!
