Programme Description

The leisure industry is dynamic and fast-moving and the nature of career opportunities in the industry is changing. This programme focuses on the broad leisure industry and includes a professional internship, practical modules and integrated continuous assessment. Practical modules include gym supervision and a safety programme for leisure management.

What are my career opportunities?

The BA in Leisure Management offers graduates the opportunity to develop careers in a range of leisure, recreation, sport and cultural organisations. Graduates have developed careers as activity co-ordinators; consultants and project managers; event organisers; facility managers; personal trainers; sport and leisure development officers with local authorities, national governing bodies; and educational institutions.

Graduates have also developed roles in sales and marketing, membership management, information technology, and have progressed to general management and group management functions within leisure organisations.

What other options do I have after completion?

Graduates have found the BA programme an excellent foundation for continuing their studies to acquire a Level 8 BSc (Honours) in Leisure Management (DT411H) and other programmes at Honours Degree and Masters level in DIT and elsewhere.

What will I study on this programme?

There is a strong emphasis on business and management subjects including marketing, human resource management, leisure law, management and accounting. Successful graduates will be prepared for entry into the sector at supervisory management level in areas such as leisure centres, theme parks, aquatic centres, golf clubs, tennis clubs, hotel leisure centres and other recreation-related developments.

Within the optional practical modules students are assessed for recognised qualifications in Lifesaving and Personal Training. Applicants should note that there is a strong emphasis on academic performance generally. Each student must complete an internship in industry during the 2nd semester of year 2. This internship may be undertaken in Ireland or abroad.

Year Two

Semester 1

Human Resource Management, Accounting for Tourism & Leisure, Management and Organisational Behaviour for Hospitality Tourism and Leisure Organisations, Database & Industry Software, EITHER Leisure Management Behavioural Competencies AND Leisure Operations OR Exercise Health Studies & Personal Training.

Semester 2

Students complete the Professional Internship and Career Management module during this Semester by working in the Leisure Industry.

Year Three

Semester 1

Facility Safety in Leisure, Management Accounting - Costing and Decision Making, Strategic Management – an Applied Approach, Leisure and Sport Policy and Planning. Students choose 2 Option modules from a range on offer in this Semester.

Semester 2

Sustainable Leisure Facilities Management, Leisure Law, Management Accounting– Planning & Controlling, Contemporary Leisure Issues. Students choose 2 Option modules from a range on offer in this Semester.

Supervised Internship is an integral part of the programme and Garda clearance may be required from applicants

Are there study abroad opportunities?

The BA in Leisure Management participates in the Erasmus student exchange scheme. Students wishing to complete a period of study abroad work with our Erasmus co-ordinator to find a suitable institute and programme of study from among our partner universities and colleges.
