What is Logistics & Supply Chain Management?

Logistics and Supply Chain management is the process by which business activities are connected and customers needs are met, by moving the right product to the right place in the right quantity at the right time, in the best condition and at an acceptable cost. It’s an area that embraces a wide range of activities including purchasing and procurement, supplier management, materials management, manufacturing, inventory management, warehousing, distribution, transport, and customer service. Increasingly, too, logistics is becoming a key consideration in new product development with logistics professionals playing their part in multi-disciplinary teams to ensure products are designed, manufactured and delivered to the market in the most cost effective and timely fashion.

What will I study on this programme?

The BSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a business degree with a major specialisation in logistics and supply chain management. The programme consists of three strands - (i) Logistics and Supply Chain Management, (ii) Business Management, and (iii) Information Management.

Year 1 provides the student with the fundamentals of business operations and logistics /supply chain management. This forms the foundation of the students’ knowledge and understanding.

Year 2 expands on the fundamentals through closer examination of functional areas within HRM. This is complemented by examination of a broad set of integrated business operations functional modules.

A critical component of Year 3 is the professional work placement which affords the student the opportunity to work alongside professionals in a mentored logistics environment. This placement affords the student a valuable opportunity to appraise real world logistics situations and apply learning from the programme to date.

Year 4 culminates in the student addressing supply chain issues at a strategic level. Case study tuition and a major research project represent the essential learning approaches.

Scholarship

First year students enrolling on this programme who have obtained 500 points or more in their Leaving Certificate, will be awarded a first year entrance scholarship of €2,000 in recognition of their outstanding performance in the Leaving Certificate Examination.

What are my career opportunities?

Career opportunities in logistics continue to grow. Even during downturns in the business cycle, when companies are cutting costs, the demand for able and experienced supply chain managers remains high. Surveys have shown that when other areas of industry have recruited less, recruitment into logistics has not declined. Some of the main areas of opportunities in logistics and supply chain management are:

Manufacturing - Logistics in manufacturing covers a range of jobs and skills, including: purchasing and procurement; quality management; inventory and materials management; forecasting and planning; business and systems analyst; and operations and production management. Examples of manufacturers who have recruited graduates of the logistics degree at DIT are CRH, Diageo, and Unilever.

Retailing - Retailing today is a competitive business. Sourcing suppliers takes retailers to every corner of the globe in a search for quality, reliability and price competitiveness. Tesco, Musgraves and Dunnes Stores have recruited graduates from the DIT logistics programme.

Logistics Service Providers - Many multinational companies use logistics service providers to manage the movement of their products around the world. Examples of such companies who have hired graduates from the logistics degree at DIT are Keelings Distribution, TNT, Wincanton, Kuehne and Nagle, and major deep sea ocean carriers such as Hapag-Lloyd.

Consultancy and Research - As companies seek to upgrade their logistics and supply chain operations they are increasingly turning to consultancy companies. Examples of such consultancy companies include Accenture and Price Waterhouse Coopers.

What our students say!

Barbara Mullins, Unilever: After I graduated from DIT I joined Unilever as a supply chain planner and since have been promoted to supply chain coordinator where I have more management responsibilities. There is no question that my degree in logistics has been hugely important to me so far in my career.

Daniel Dowdall - Hugh Jordan & Co: When I graduated, despite the difficult economic period, I began working as a purchasing executive for Hugh Jordan and company. The course has the advantage of providing a number of specific knowledge and skill sets which can be used in any position and industry across the business spectrum.

Kirstin – Diageo & PhD research scholarship: Looking back at the supply chain degree I can say with certainty that the diversity of subjects, approachability of lecturers and especially the work placement in third year have helped me not only in finding a suitable job in the field as well as higher positions, but also in pursuing a higher academic degree.

Nan Zhao – JF Hillebrand: I work as an Export/Import Coordinator for JF Hillebrand. The Logistics & Supply Chain degree in DIT definitely contributed to improving my career opportunities in Ireland and abroad, working for global logistics companies.

John Crowe, Researcher in 3S Group, DIT: After graduating from DIT with a BSc in logistics and supply chain management, I found that my degree widened the range of jobs I could apply for and got a job straight away as an inventory analyst in Unilever Ireland. I am currently back in DIT undertaking postgraduate research using simulation and optimisation technologies in supply chain management. This degree gives graduates a very competitive edge when they enter the workforce due to the specific expertise in supply chain management that they gain during their studies. I thoroughly recommend this degree to any student who has a keen interest in all aspects of business, from marketing to purchasing, and for those who wonder how the can of coke they are buying in a shop got there.
