What is Nutraceuticals in Health & Nutrition?

A nutraceutical is any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Such products may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements and specific diets to designer foods, herbal products and processed foods such as cereals, soups and beverages which ultimately optimise health and nutrition.

What are my career opportunities?

A successful graduate of this programme will be qualified to enter a rewarding career in the food, pharmaceutical and emerging nutraceutical industries. The development of either nutraceutical or functional food products designed for optimal nutrition is key for health promotion and disease prevention. Graduates will be suitably qualified to participate in nutraceutical research, innovative food product development and allied areas in these industries where there is a current and future need for such skilled graduates in Ireland and across the EU. Opportunities will exist for graduates to extend their education either through taught or research programmes leading to higher degrees which may open up greater career opportunities in this expanding area of Irish industry.

What other options do I have after completion?

Students who have reached the appropriate honours standard may have access to a range of Masters degrees in DIT and elsewhere in Higher Education.

What will I study on this programme?

The mission of this programme is to educate students in a comprehensive range of disciplines including scientific, technological and culinary areas in order to meet with the requirements of the nutraceutical and functional food industries. Our goal is to teach our students fundamental science as it is applied to nutraceutical systems and to show its application to the solution of problems in food related health and nutrition.
