What is Preliminary Engineering?
The aim of the programme is to prepare suitable students for entry to one of the DIT Bachelor of Engineering honours degree programmes. The general target group is students who have the desire and the capacity to become professional engineers but do not have the honours Mathematics requirement at Leaving Certificate level and do not have relevant engineering related subjects such as Physics, Applied Mathematics etc. Particular target groups are Leaving Certificate students who get an A or B grade in Ordinary Level Mathematics and girls who have an interest in Engineering but may not have been able to pursue the relevant subjects – particularly Honours Mathematics.
What will I study on this programme?
Objectives on successful completion of the programme are:
Students will have the mathematical and scientific basis to successfully embark on a Bachelor of Engineering honours degree programme.
Students will have been introduced to a variety of engineering processes across a range of disciplines and be able to operate equipment and machinery, carry out basic experiments and complete fundamental assembly and test procedures.
Students will have developed their communications and computer skills so as to effectively retrieve information, write reports and make presentations.
Entry is also open to mature students, international students and non-standard applicants through the regular CAO and DIT procedures.
Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of approximately €3,500. The free fees scheme does not apply to this programme.
Module listing
The programme is of one year duration and is delivered in a modular format across two semesters. The modules are all compulsory and comprise Engineering Mathematics 1, Engineering Mathematics 2, Engineering Physics 1, Engineering Physics 2, Mechanics, Chemistry, Engineering Workshop, Engineering Drawing, Computing, Communication Studies and an Engineering Project. The project involves small groups of students working together to prepare and make a presentation on an engineering topic.
The overall programme is designed to be a blend of analytical and practical subjects with report writing, presentation and communication abilities, key requirements for successful students.
What are my career opportunities?
The Honours Degree Programmes to which Preliminary Engineering graduates may progress are:
*These programmes have a common first year () which students must successfully complete before progression. There are limited places on the second year of these programmes and places are offered on the basis of performance in examination and assessments.
What other options do I have after completion?
Successful students may also progress onto the first year of one of the DIT honours engineering degree programmes, subject to certain requirements as set out in the programme document.
Examination and Assessment
The assessment of students will be carried out by a combination of examinations, assessment tests and assessment of work done in laboratories, workshops and on the project. Successful students are awarded a DIT Foundation Certificate in Professional Engineering which is an NQAI Level 6 award.
