What are my career opportunities?
The qualification is for the profession of chartered surveyor, which includes occupations in the fields of property valuation, investment and management, auctioneering & estate agency. Property economists are concerned with the broader areas of land and property development, valuation surveying, estate management and town planning. They are employed in private and public organisations such as firms of auctioneers and estate agents, property development companies, valuation consultants, local authorities and the National Valuation Office. In addition graduates have used the skills and knowledge obtained on the programme to develop careers in financial and investment institutions, such as banks and investment companies and also in the wider business environment. The programmes and careers in the discipline of property surveying call for an interest and ability in the financial and legal aspects of the property and construction industry and in the managerial skills applied to building and property developments.
The Property Asset Management & Valuation option in final year will enable graduates to develop careers working with or giving advice to major property owning companies, such as semi-state and investment companies, banks, etc., in managing and optimising their property assets.
What other options do I have after completion?
Students who have reached the appropriate honours standard may have access to a range of Masters degrees in DIT and elsewhere in Higher Education.
What will I study on this programme?
The broad aim of the programme is to develop a property professional capable of operating in a dynamic and competitive environment. Graduates may be employed as valuers, estate agents, property consultants and investment advisors, developers and planners. The programme provides an education in the financial, legal, planning and construction aspects of property in the context of the investment market in general and it provides students with a thorough understanding of the economic functioning of the built environment. Upon successful completion of an assessment of professional competence, holders of these awards are eligible for corporate membership of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the U.K. They are exempted from the Intermediate Examination of the Royal Town Planning Institute and are also accepted for entry to appropriate postgraduate programmes in Ireland and abroad.
