What is Visual & Critical Studies?
The BA in Visual and Critical Studies will provide up-to-date histories and theories of visual culture, methods of research, practical skills of documentation in new media and real-world experience in sectors that cater to the public mediation of art and design. Taught alongside those studying fine art and design practice will help the students develop a deep understanding of the contemporary processes of art and design. They will develop excellent skills in the academic articulation of visual and textual research, and gain the understanding and professional competencies necessary to promote visual culture.
What are my career opportunities?
Graduates will have a strong ability to engage with, research and assess contemporary visual culture - its mechanisms, progress and outcomes. They will be able to work in sectors promoting and mediating visual culture: in cultural centres, museums, galleries, media and publication, visual art and design research and audience development. These roles include curators, mediators of visual culture, cultural journalists, consultants on cultural policy, writers and editors for publications, cultural events planners, researchers on and teachers of contemporary culture.
What other options do I have after completion?
Graduates who achieve the appropriate honours standard have access to a range of taught Masters, MPhil and PhD degrees by research in DIT or elsewhere in Ireland and abroad.
What will I study on this programme?
The programme will give students an understanding of advanced theories of visual and material culture. Students will be introduced to recent cultural histories, theories of vision, practices of visual culture, institutional critique and object analysis and will develop an advance critical understanding of the role, function and value of visual culture in contemporary society.
The BA in Visual and Critical Studies is taught over three years and includes core (compulsory) and optional modules. The programme provides students with academic and real-world knowledge on the functions and potential of art and design in contemporary society. In each of the three years of the programme, students avail of a discipline history of their choice: Fine Art, Visual Communication or Interior & Furniture Design. Through a suite of option modules, students will also be able to focus on selected theories of visual culture.

Students are introduced to key histories & theories of visual culture, methods of research, documentation & presentation of findings. In the core modules students will gain the knowledge & skills necessary to begin their engagement with contemporary visual culture. Through a suite of option modules, students will be able to focus on a discipline history & theories of visual culture of their choice.
Year Two

Students will advance their knowledge of industries of contemporary visual culture, & academic research & articulation proficiency. The core modules will address the key concepts that frame contemporary visual culture. A collaborative module will provide the students with real world industry/academic exchange experience, ensuring the broader application of their research. Through a suite of option modules, students will be able to expand their knowledge of discipline histories & specific theories of visual culture.
Year Three
- Public Presentation
- Research Realisation
Students will refine their academic abilities & present a professional standard research thesis. Core modules will focus on in-depth research practice, the utilization of key visual & textual resources, archival material & culminate in the collation of independent research project. Through a suite of option modules, students will continue to advance their engagement with discipline histories & chosen theories of visual culture.
