On the same day as the audition, candidates are required to sit a short written paper and an aural paper.

Audition / Interview information for Commerical Modern Music (DT506)

All applicants must attend an assessment. In order to book an assessment you must complete an assessment application form. The assessments for 2012 entry will commence in November 2011.

The format of your assessment depends on the stream in which you wish to specialise. You must choose one stream- either guitar, bass, drums vocals or songwriting. This is what you will be assessed on. We are looking for basic semi professional level of performance at your assessment/ audition. We welcome self taught musicians and the ability to read music is not essential. Nonetheless, we do expect a decent level of gigging experience. We encourage individuality and personality in a musician but also want to make sure that you are not ultimately limited by poor technique.

The assessment process will include an hour long presentation where you will learn about all aspects of life at BIMM Dublin and the courses we offer. This is an integral part of your assessment which you must attend otherwise your assessment is not complete. BIMM staff will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.

You will be sent a confirmation letter with some more detail once you have been given the time and date of your assessment. The following is a basic idea of what to expect in each assessment, and is subject to change:

All assessments will require musicians to demonstrate their standard of musicianship, technique, aural perception and theory.

In guitar, bass and drum assessments you will perform a prepared piece which is no longer than 4 minutes long. This should be a piece you are comfortable playing. You may wish to bring a backing track for your performance but this is not mandatory.

In the vocal assessment, you will choose a track to perform from a set list of songs. You will be given the list of songs to choose from in advance and we will provide the backing track for your performance at the assessment.

In the songwriting assessment you will be expected to perform some of your original work backed up with examples of your preparation material. In addition you will need to demonstrate your level of instrument skills on either guitar or keyboards.

At your assessment you will be able to gain extra points to add to your Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) points.
