This part-time programme has been developed by DIT in collaboration with the Institution of Fire Engineers (Republic of Ireland branch) and is an ordinary degree programme in Fire Engineering (NQAI level 7) which is aimed at members of the fire services and the fire safety/engineering sector in general.
The programme runs over four stages, and can be completed in four years. It is delivered at DIT Bolton St. Attendance generally requires 1 evening and 1 full day per week, although extra classes may be scheduled as required.
The programme covers major topics in fire safety and fire safety systems, fire services operations and procedures, relevant legislation and the fundamentals of building technology, as well as the scientific, technical mathematical and professional development.
A minimum of 5 subjects in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent to include at least two ordinary level C3’s or equivalent, a pass in English or Irish and an Ordinary level D3 grade in Mathematics. Successful completion of any IFE Examinations will also allow entry to the programme. Holders of certain IFE examinations may gain exemption or advanced entry to the programme. Mature and non-standard applicants will be considered on a case by case basis.
Examinations / Assessments
The programme is semesterised and examinations are held in January and May as per the college calendar. Projects also form a significant part of the assessment in the later years of the programme.
Successful graduates may apply for level 8 programmes in relevant fields.
The programme aims to produce graduates who will be able to understand and apply the scientific, technical, legislative knowledge and management skills relevant to fire engineering in their professional practice and continue their professional development.
This programme is suitable for career development in the fire services and fire engineering sector generally, and will permit advanced entry to honours degree programmes in the relevant fields.
