Programme Description

The nature of the manager’s job in the hospitality industry is such that an understanding and knowledge of training is an important aspect of management. This module introduces the student to training and provides a practical application to training in the work environment.

Content

  • Overview of training, systematic training, the role of the trainer in hospitality, tourism, leisure and event management
  • How people learn, the learning process, how trainers develop, the communications process
  • Training methods and training styles, motivation and training, visual aids and computers in training, assignment portfolio
  • Job analysis and skills analysis, staff skills audits, workplace individual and group training
  • Preparing a training programme, setting objectives  
  • Planning and delivery of a training session to a group of trainees
  • Planning and delivery of a demonstration training session for individual and groups
  • Assessment – how to assess training
  • Feedback and evaluation, interpersonal behaviour and training, managing stress
  • Coaching techniques: how to carry out aon2one coaching session and small group coaching sessions
  • Group training techniques
  • Training and assessment in the workplace, managing assessments, presentation of assignments
  • Planning for training - training needs audits
  • Giving supportive help
  • Module review

How to Apply/Enrol

As the number of places is limited, candidates may be short-listed on the basis of information supplied on the application form. Applicants will be notified in early September whether this programme will run and informed of the precise schedule of classes.

Entry Requirements

Under 23 years of age

(a) Irish Leaving Certificate in five subjects.  Results must include:

  • At least OD3 in Irish OR English
  • At least OD3 in Mathematics
  • At least Grade OD3 in one of French OR German

OR

(b) an equivalent qualification

Over 23 years of age

Candidates will be considered on a base by case basis.

Examinations

Assessment and examination

Progression

The examinations will be considered for exemption from the equivalent subject on the Higher Certificate in Hospitality Services Management (Programme Code DT451) and/or on the BA in Hospitality Management (Programme Code DT460).

Learning Outcome

On completion the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the principles of training.
  • Describe and practice the key elements of a training session with respect to technical and group / knowledge based training.
  • Recognise links between training and standards.
  • Describe the key elements of planning and managing training and development at departmental / organisational level.
  • Recognise situations in the workplace where training needs take place.
  • Analyse tasks in order to plan effective training.
  • Design and deliver units of training for individuals and groups to meet those needs.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of training.
