The overall aim of the BA Hospitality Management is to prepare learners academically and professionally leading to employment at management level in the dynamic world of the hospitality industry. Entry Requirements

Irish Leaving Certificate in five subjects.  Results must include

(a)    At least OD3 in Irish or English,

(b)   At least OD3 in Mathematics

(c)    at least Grade OD3 in one of French or German

or

an equivalent qualification

Applicants must be currently working in the hospitality industry or must have substantial experience in the hospitality industry in order to be considered for the programme.  All applicants will be interviewed.

The School will consider applications from mature students (aged 23 and over) who do not hold the appropriate minimum entry requirements but who have substantial experience in the hospitality industry. 

The final selection of candidates for places on the course will be made on the basis of Leaving Certificate results (or equivalent) and experience in the hospitality industry. Places may be offered to mature students who meet certain criteria in respect of age, suitability and experience to-date in the hospitality industry. Transferees from other courses will also be considered.  Students will be allowed to transfer between the day-release and evening programmes, subject to approval from the Head of Department and/or Head of School. Interviews will be used in the selection process. Exemptions may be given in specific modules (see section on exemptions and Recognition of Prior Learning), on a case by case basis.

Progression

Upon completion of this programme students may progress into the final year of the BA (ordinary) in Hospitality Management or equivalent programme.  

Learning Outcome

On completion of this programme the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate the theoretical knowledge, practical and inter-personal skills and the social responsibility required to pursue a management career in the hospitality industry.
  • choose a career path from a range of options within the hospitality industry or progress to higher level programmes.
  • respond to the demands of the changing environment in which the hospitality sector operates, through an innovative, flexible and responsible management approach.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are almost limitless in hotels, food and tourism enterprises worldwide. Graduates are trained professionals with sound operational work experience and a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality industry. As such, they are in demand by a large cross section of the industry from general and operational management within the tourism industry, to more specialised areas. Career opportunities in this sector include marketing and sales, HRM, food and beverage management, rooms division management, and conferencing management in Ireland and abroad. In addition, graduates may progress to a variety of postgraduate programmes in a range of disciplines.
