Introduction

Please note due to the great demand for our programmes early applications are assessed when received and dealt with promptly. Therefore it is advisable to make early applications for an early response. Programme Title and Award

Master of Music (Opera) or Master of Music (Repetiteur) with Classifications of: First Class Honours; Second Class Honours, Upper Division; Second Class Honours, Lower Division.  

Who Should Apply?

The MMus (Opera/Repetiteur) programme is suitable for singers with sufficient relevant experience and vocal maturity to cope with the rigorous demands of the programme and who clearly demonstrate the potential for entry to the profession.  The programme is also open to repetiteurs with sufficient relevant experience and who clearly demonstrate the potential for entry to the profession.

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

This exciting new programme is unique in Ireland and is designed to give advanced, postgraduate singers and repetiteurs the highest level operatic training possible.

Aims:

  1. develop and refine your individual performance artistry as an opera singer/repetiteur;
  2. develop creative skills and professional attitudes to enable engagement and collaboration in the opera-making process and the wider profession;
  3. promote advanced skills in research, critical reflection, and communication;
  4. develop skills for education, self-promotion and personal business management. 

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of your studies, you are expected to be able to:

  1. perform with advanced and distinctive technical and expressive artistry, and synthesizing a wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding;
  2. collaborate effectively and creatively with professionals, peers and non-specialists;
  3. demonstrate advanced skills in research and communication;
  4. engage in critical reflection and respond positively to feedback from professionals and peers;
  5. demonstrate a range of skills associated with entrepreneurialism, self-promotion and career preparation.                    
     

Course Content

The MMus (Opera/Repetiteur) programme is a one-year full-time programme, lasting 12 months.  It comprises four modules:

                        From Page to Stage    10 ECTS credits          

                        Production 1                40 ECTS credits          

                        Production 2                30 ECTS credits

                        The Professional         10 ECTS credits

From Page to Stage

This advanced module will provide you with the opportunity to engage in an in-depth study of an operatic role/opera (repetiteurs).  The aim of the module is to expose you to the multiple layers of study involved in bringing an operatic role or opera from page to stage.

Production 1 and Production 2

This advanced module will provide you with an understanding and direct experience of the skills required for participation in a fully staged public professional presentation of an opera/opera scenes.

The aims of the module are to equip you with the advanced performance skills required to enter the operatic profession.  The module comprises the following elements:

                        • Principal Study Lesson

                        • Coaching Session/Language

                        • Movement/Stagecraft

                        • Language

                        • Recitative Class

                        • Performance Impact Module

                        • Production Rehearsals and Performances

                        and other skills as required. 

The Professional       

This advanced module provides you with a ‘hands on’ experience of the professional at work.  The module will include a placement with a professional performing arts company and an in-depth look at the business acumen necessary for successful career management.  Finally the module will provide experience in the field of opera in education.

Timetable / Hours

The programme takes place over one year of full-time study and involves two placements. 

Award

Successful completion of all 4 modules (i.e. 90 ECTS credits) leads to the award of MMus (Opera) or MMus (Repetiteur).

Successful completion of all modules except Production 2 (i.e. 60 ECTS credits) leads to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Opera / Repetiteurship.
