Continuing Professional Development
CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is the systematic updating and enhancement of skills, knowledge and competence which takes place throughout working life. Most professionals recognise the need for professional updating but CPD's emphasis on systematic development and the comprehensive identification of learning opportunities now provides a framework within which both formal and informal learning activities can be set. Learning and development becomes planned, rather than accidental.
CPD is continuing because learning never ceases, regardless of age or seniority; It is professional because it is focused on personal competence in a professional role. It is concerned with development because its goal is to improve personal performance and enhance career progression and is much wider than just formal training courses.
The obligation to undertake CPD or lifelong learning typically requires practitioners or members of a professional institution to achieve a minimum of 60 hours learning every three years with at least 10 hours each year.

The Department offers three short programmes that support practitioners in meeting their CPD requirements. These are:

Corporate and Continuing Professional Development for Industry
The Department of Spatial Information Sciences can respond to the specialist training needs of organisations and their staff, by offering customised corporate training on a part-time intensive basis.
Surveying & Mapping Developments Series
In response to the downturn in the survey industry DIT's Department of Spatial Information Sciences is offering a series of seminars on recent developments in technology, methods and industry standards.

Visiting Lecturer 2009
The department was delighed to welcome Roger A. Longhorn, the Director of Info-Dynamics Research Associates Ltd. (UK), the Head of I-DRA EC Projects Office, Belgium and the Editor of GEO:connexion International magazine on March 27th to deliver two lectures on "Information Policy – Drivers, Formulation and Implementation" and "Public Sector Information in e-Government and Geospatial Information Policy" to the MSc in Spatial Information Management class.
