This page describes an implementation of an assessment method by a lecturer or group of lecturers. The content of the page is the result of an interview conducted through the RAFT project in DIT in the 2013-14 Academic Year.

Description
Three sets of multiple choice (primarily) quizzes, 20 mins, 20 questions, open book, 3 weeks (unsupervised), single attempt. There is a question bank consisting of 40 questions, each quiz selects 20 of these 40, thus students will not receive the same questions in the same order.
Why did you use this assessment?
This form of assessment forces some study prior to end of the semester, all students do at least one hour of study three times during the semester.
Why did you change to this form of assessment?
This form of assessment is fair, black & white, gives indication of understanding/comprehension.
How do you give feedback to students?
Automated generation of feedback (right or wrong), the correct answers are displayed at the end of the quiz.
What have you found are the advantages of using this form of assessment?
- Ease of administration
- Once set-up ease of re-use etc.
What have you found are the dis-advantages of using this form of assessment?
- Potential to cheat (although in experience students have not)
- Alot of work in set-up within webcourses (poor software).
- Slow process.
If another lecturer was using this assessment method would you have any tips for them?
Do: Training course with the LTTC, sample quiz with all types of questions for students to attempt.
Do you have any feedback from students about this assessment?
Students do not dislike it. For students who do well it increases confidence levels.
