AIMS

Encourage staff and students to incorporate Green Campus-themed projects into the curriculum

Communicate with DIT staff, students and the wider community to raise awareness of sustainability issues

Actively promote the Green Campus project to staff and students

Include all DIT locations in Green Campus initiatives to achieve a holistic and inclusive approach

WASTE

Work closely with the DIT Estates Management Team, DIT Maintenance Office and Canteen staff to ensure high recycling standards are met and that appropriate waste segregation is achieved. Estates Manager is Paul Mc Dunphy. Email: estates@dit.ie or Call: (01) 402 3440.

Conduct occasional audits of the DIT waste facilities and monitor waste contractor(s) figures to assess quantity and quality of waste generated within the institute.

Monitor streamlining of waste receptacles on Campus.

Liaise with staff and encourage students to get involved through projects/assignment work.

Liaise with Student Societies and Student’s Union to encourage behavioural change through recreational activities.

Promotion via improved signage and social media campaigns to improve waste reduction and waste segregation compliance rates.

Promote the use of travel mugs with the aim of reducing the number of disposable cups entering waste streams.

Promote the re-use and upcycling of construction waste material in gardening solutions for the Educational Garden and other related projects throughout the Institution.

Promote the re-use and upcycling of materials through partnerships with organisations who deal with Resource Efficiency. (Eg.: Oxfam, Camara, Rehab Recycle, Free Trade Ireland, etc.)

Strive to influence Green Procurement/Tender practices when hiring waste contractors (e.g. ensure that the chosen waste company manages its collected wastes in the most environmentally responsible way possible).

 

WATER

Carry out occasional audits of drinking water fountains in DIT locations to determine water quality and operational functionality. If there are issues with water facilities, call Estates Helpdesk at (01) 402 7666 or Email: estates.helpdesk@dit.ie

Liaise with staff and encourage students to get involved through projects/assignment work.

Liaise with Student Societies and Student’s Union to encourage behavioural change through recreational activities.

Promote a reduction of disposable plastic bottle water usage on campus.

Promotion via improved signage and social media campaigns highlighting the importance of saving water at all DIT locations.

Raise awareness of availability of potable water at all cold water points in all buildings throughout the new Grangegorman campus.

 

ENERGY

Support the efforts of the DIT Energy Management Program and the E3 Universities Energy Bureau.

Promotion via improved signage and social media campaigns highlighting the importance of switching off lights and computers when leaving a room.

Liaise with staff and encourage students to get involved through projects/assignment work.

Liaise with Student Societies and Student’s Union to encourage behavioural change through recreational activities.

 

TRANSPORT

Continue to support the plans and ongoing initiatives of Smarter Travel Campus (National Transport Authority): walking, cycling, public transport use, and car pooling.

Promotion via improved signage and social media campaigns highlighting the importance of sustainable transport options.

Continue to liaise with local bicycle shops to encourage and promote offers and special rates and services for students and staff of DIT.

Continually update DIT Transport webpage with support from Campus Life, Sports Office and Public Affairs Office.

Liaise with staff and encourage students to get involved through projects/assignment work.

Liaise with Student Societies and Student’s Union to encourage behavioural change through recreational activities.

 

BIODIVERSITY

Monitor the twelve swift boxes and accompanying web-cams installed on the Grangegorman campus

Ensure ongoing monitoring of the swift project and promote the incorporation of ‘swift bricks’ into new builds on the Grangegorman site to provide further permanent homes for swifts

Install twenty nest boxes for other bird species at the Grangegorman site co-ordinated with the DIT woodworking apprentices’ bird box design and build project

Liaise with Dublin City Council and Bird Watch Ireland to encourage DIT student participation in the DCC, BWI joint bird monitoring programme

Continue to support the work of the Biodiversity Section at Dublin City Council and assist in organizing events for DIT students

Establish the Grangegorman Urban Quarter ‘Educational Garden’ highlighting species diversity of wildlife and establish allotments for food

 

HEALTH AND NUTRITION / PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Support the DIT Sports Office and Health Promotion with activities where possible (e.g. Smarter Travel ‘Light-Up’ Campaign and Pedometer Challenge)

Liaise with the DIT Sports Office and ongoing promotion of healthy activities

Promote walking, cycling and public transport usage through social media, website, poster campaigns and events

Provide support to DIT students with an interest in researching health, nutrition and physical activity with regard to the DIT community

Encourage the promotion of healthy, sustainable and locally-sourced food

 

COMMUNICATION, STUDENT/STAFF INVOLVEMENT AND TRANSPARENCY

Encourage DIT students and staff from all backgrounds of study to become involved with Green Campus activities

Schedule monthly Green Campus Committee meetings

Raise the profile of the Green Campus initiative during Induction Weeks held for new DIT students

Develop and manage projects with students and student groups

Promote the newly established Green Campus “GreenSoc” and plan and participate in GreenSoc events and social nights

 

Some of DIT Green Campus’ Past, Current and Ongoing Projects

 

  • First ‘Green Week’ held in March 2014

  • Presence at Induction Week Sep 2014 – Raised profile

  • Aided DIT Volunteering with Royal Canal Clean-Up, Induction Week

  • Initiated and set up ‘GreenSoc’ Sep 2014 – present throughout Societies Week

  • Applied for LA 21 and Dublin Community Spirit Awards funding for Swift Boxes and Educational Garden at Grangegorman

  • Planning for ‘Green Days’ throughout coming months (Students from DIT Event Management, etc. helping to organize for at least first Green Day, Nov 2014)

  • Twelve swift boxes to be installed at Grangegorman before Spring 2015

  • Successful ‘Swift Talk’ held at Grangegorman in Oct 2014

  • Will be encouraging students to become involved with Bird Monitoring Project with Dublin City Council and Bird Watch Ireland from Spring 2015 onwards

  • Twenty nest boxes for other bird species being constructed by DIT Linenhall Woodwork students and installed before Spring 2015

  • Planning campaigns to encourage travel mug over reduction of coffee cup usage throughout DIT locations

  • Continually searching for sponsorship and ideas to acquire travel mugs for students

  • Supporting students with sustainable-themed projects (e.g. Impact of E-cigs vs. Cigs in DIT; Nutritional Content of Food in DIT, Water Quality/Facilities in DIT)

  • Continually working with Estates staff to encourage better waste management behaviour and planning to create streamlined signage on all bins to encourage proper segregation at source

  • Continually encouraging staff and students to walk, cycle and use public transport to college, informing them of their options and supporting Smarter Travel (NTA) with their initiatives and campaigns in relation to DIT

  • Planning for proper implementation of ‘Dead Bikes’ Scheme at DIT

  • Improving upon contact with DITSU, DIT Societies and College Officers, etc so as to address as many of the DIT community as possible

  • Continually building up usage of social media and website to encourage interest and participation
