Update for week of 13 February 2017

New Research Ethics Online Application

The Research Ethics and Integrity Committee of the Institute has designed an online ethics application form which is now the mechanism for submission of applications for ethical review. This represents the culmination of significant work by the committee to streamline the application processes and simplify things where possible. All details related to the project can be uploaded directly to the form and attachments may also be included in relation to e.g. project outlines, flowcharts or other graphics.

Following completion of the first page (which captures basic information about the project) there are two 'paths' through the online form:

1) for projects with no ethical issues (e.g. some laboratory-based studies), an expedited approach be taken in that a declaration is completed, signatures of the researcher and the head of school (or function) are uploaded and the application submitted electronically.

2) for projects which have more extensive issues, the form will lead the researcher through all of the essential components of a submission to ensure that a high-quality submission can be made and the requirement for clarifications reduced as much as possible. Once again signatures of the researcher and the head of school (or function) are uploaded and the application submitted electronically.

In each case, a pdf of the complete application will be automatically e-mailed to the researcher, the Head of School and the REIC and an application reference number will also be generated for the application, which can be used in correspondence with the REIC.

The online form is available here and the REIC can be contacted directly at researchethics@dit.ie
