Update for week of 22 February 2016

DIT lecturer elected to NUJ Ethical Council (Europe)

Dr. Michael Foley, Co-ordinator of the MA in Journalism in the School of Media, has been elected to the Ethical Council of the NUJ.  The Council is concerned with ethical issues for the whole Union in Ireland and Britain as well as its branches elsewhere in Europe.  Michael has represented National newspapers on the Council for the past two years and was nominated to stand for election to represent Ireland for the next two years.

Michael was recently invited by the International federation of Journalists and UNESCO to write a syllabus addressing journalism safety and ethics to be delivered to students in the Arab world.  The request was in response to the increased risk to journalists working in the Middle East and other areas of conflict. The first draft of the syllabus was presented by Dr. Foley at a conference on journalism safety in Beirut last week.
