The Capstone Project draws on a number of modules in Third Year (the award year of the programme). Students research and design; produce CAD drawings and cutting lists; document their research and progress in a 7,000 word thesis; as well as construct and finish complex pieces of furniture.
The brief is to research and produce an artefact of furniture or joinery predating 1950. They can reproduce the artefact as close as possible to the original using traditional methods or modern methods, they can vary or adjust the design again using a combination of construction and finishing methods or they can design something new using the original artefact as inspiration. Pieces by Thomas Sheraton, Michael Thonet, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright are popular inspirations.
